Cat Shelter Estimates and Options

Because we know there are many worthwhile causes tug at your wallet, we developed several cat shelter estimates and options. We want to prove we are creative, serious, and careful with your money. You can see that we aren’t inflating costs, and yes, it’s a lot of money even for the lowest priced option.

Unfortunately, we aren’t able to build one ourselves. We would welcome donations of materials and/or labor.

We’ll be very grateful for your help to provide any of the options listed.

We accept contributions through PayPal at penny (use the at sign) pennyleisch (use the dot) com.

We’re exploring new ways to publicize our project.

The Residential Retreat (our dream room)

The residential retreat is a large screened, escape proof, and predator proof (wire under the screening), patio room with an isolation area and appropriate cat amenities. We can furnish this area with Feral Villas, which are insulated, and install sunscreen like we have on the little 6′x8′ back yard shelter. A ventilation system, such as a couple of solar garage fans, will minimize utility cost and provide summer comfort.

We have two comparable estimates from companies that are properly licensed and insured.

Contractor #1 gave a bid on a screened patio that is 15′ x 23′  @ $10,200 (which includes a 15% discount, full price is $12,000). This includes a concrete foundation, appropriate screening with wire overlay for security and predator proofing, shingles, fan, light, gutters, 3′  base wall, exterior door.

Contractor #2 gave a bid on a screened patio that is 12′ x 23′ @ $10,775. This includes a concrete foundation, appropriate screening with wire overlay for security and predator proofing, shingles, exterior door with handicapped accessibility.

Notice in our photos that we use solar lights in the small shelter we presently have. It also has sun shade material (which lowers summer temperatures 10-15 degrees, as well as providing a wind and rain break). The latest additions are solar refrigerator fans to circulate the air. They aren’t powerful enough to do harm if a paw gets into them, but they run all the time when the sun is on the panel. We’ll be thinking economically and ecologically for everything. We watch Freecycle regularly for materials or supplies.

The Suncatcher

Third on the list is a large 10.5 x 12 enclosure with a catch door on a solid base, with very good anchoring. Only the cats that could fend for themselves should there ever be a breach of the structure, such as storm damage, would be in this environment. However, this is an extremely sturdy metal structure with metal roofing. Because it would be a primary shelter and freestanding structure, we think it would make sense to pay the extra $222 to get the heavier 8 gauge construction.

The Ultimate package for this item includes furnishings, 1 cat walks, 11 shelves, a large cat tree and Free Shipping, which is significant on these large and heavy items. That makes it come to $6,009.95 for the structure and furnishings.

Lift gate delivery, which is essential, since we aren’t body builders, costs $125.

The base we’d need requires 143 patio pavers (12″x12″) for the enclosure and 16 additional pavers for the catch door, plus sand, anchors, and labor to install the base and assemble the building. We are not strong enough or skilled enough to do this correctly.

Pavers cost $1.30 x 159 pavers = $206.70 + tax of $17.05 = $223.75

Sand costs = $3.10 per 50# bag @ 1 bag per 3 sq ft  = $164.30 + tax of $13.55 = $177.85

Delivery of the pavers and sand and additional parts costs $35, if all done in one delivery.

Safety Catch Door = $875 (see info below)

Labor and assembly = $1,000.00 for two people plus miscellaneous hardware for anchoring (delivery is curbside and all materials have to be moved manually to the rear yard).

The estimate for this structure is $7,362

The upside to this shelter is that it could be moved, should the need ever arise. We investigated large chicken coop tractors and other structures that we could repurpose. However, there wasn’t a substantial savings and they didn’t offer the enough access to carry in large bags of litter or provide shelves and climbing trees.

The Camping Cabin

For this option, we’ve selected a combination of an environmentally friendly shed and a large wood and wire enclosure added to the outside for indoor/outdoor access. This option, like the Suncatcher can be moved. The limitations are that it’s not going to last as long as a patio room or metal structure. In addition, the structural integrity isn’t as good in severe weather.

Large sheds – Measures 8′ x 15′ for $1579.99 (vinyl)

or 10′ x 12′  for $2,039 (wood/shingle)

Outdoor Run to attach to shed 6′ x 14′ (for vinyl shed) costs $799.99 + shipping $220 = $1019.99

or the 6′ x 12′ for (wood/shingle shed) = $699.99 + shipping $199 = $898.99

Pavers cost $1.30 x 159 pavers = $206.70 + tax of $17.05 = $223.75 (may need 208 pavers=$270.04)

Sand costs = $3.10 per 50# bag @ 1 bag per 3 sq ft  = $164.30 + tax of $13.55 = $177.85

Delivery of the pavers and sand and additional parts costs $35, if all done in one delivery.

Safety Catch Door = $875 (see info below) When this item isn’t a part of the Suncatcher set up, there’s an additional charge of $125 for liftgate service, plus $119 for shipping.

Labor and assembly = $1,000.00 for two people and miscellaneous hardware for anchoring (delivery is curbside and all materials have to be moved manually to the rear yard too).

Climate control $599/regular price (see info below, this is essential in a building in a climate of 104+ temps)

Total for a vinyl building and run $5,754.58

Total for a wood building and run $6,092.59
